Fear of the Dark (level 48+)

Some strategies for beating the highest level version of this dungeon. This dungeon is fairly easy once you get good strategies down, and there are some really nice high level charms you can craft if you trigger the Vital Force drop - more on that later.

Fight 1: http://wl.attrib.org/estiah/replay/f0cc618f
Basic idea: You need to debuff your own constant magic and melee, and the Hulking Shadow steals the debuffs and uses them to kill his allies. Eventually the shadow exhausts himself. Mana Poisoning is the most important charm here, because there's the potential for a lot of magic damage to come your way if you don't debuff magic fast enough. Fill the rest of your deck with ward to make sure you live through this.

Fight 2: http://wl.attrib.org/estiah/replay/c6477345
Basic idea: You'll get a steady amount of +next melee and +magic ongoing as the fight goes on, so the game is surviving long enough that enough bonuses accumulate for you to kill everyone. You need lots of ward, but because of the banes on you that destroy ward, it's most useful if it comes from auras, and Bel'Hathal is particularly powerful.

FIght 3: http://wl.attrib.org/estiah/replay/ad525ecd
So the more spirit runes you play, the faster the Cocoon hatches, and the faster he kills all his allies and eventually himself. But there's also a ton of melee damage coming your way, and you really want to keep your armor above 0 so the abominations' charms don't trigger. Those are basically your two goals. Spirit charms that give you armor are very good, and extra action spirit charms are best of all. Wriggling Larva is a rare (20%ish) drop that you can only get from this fight.

Fight 4: http://wl.attrib.org/estiah/replay/bb199d75
The succubus puts summons on you that buff your ongoing damage and heal you. So simply use a lot of summon extenders, and a few earth charms. I guess this fight is probably harder for non-summoners, but I wouldn't know about that. If you use both Purifying Larva and Ardent Abominations, you trigger the Vital Force drop - and those charms are both crafted with, you guessed it, Wriggling Larva.

I've been trying for 3 days to beat fight 3. I'm only 48, not 51, so it may be that I need to wait... which kinda sucks as I was hoping to make my level 48 class charms. You have 3 charms I saw in the replay that I can't use, Sandsteel Shield, Duty and Terrible Idea. Duty I won't be able to use forever, although I have other armor charms. I'm wondering how much RNG is involved here. I'd say I'm down to 50% of hp or less by the time the cocoon hatches, but if I put in more spirit charms, I die faster, and if I put in less, it takes forever for the cocoon to hatch.

Sorry for all the whining lately. I don't sit here like the designers of these places seem to, analyzing every possible charm and % chance to pop up at just the right time. So I just run a gear set, see how badly I lose, tweak it, and try again, but these are getting really tedious.

I actually tried this dungeon a while ago. The first 2 fights weren't that hard. The 3rd fight was really annoying and took me about 10 tries and a lot of help from the RNG to beat. I do remember I needed to throw in lots of ward and cleanse to prevent the damage from all those banes. And then the 4th fight was impossible at that time. There really aren't that much summon extenders available and I just didn't have enough of those.

But I'm planning on going there again tonight. I really need my shaman class charms in order beat the Godblade. Which really isn't going to be easy because I'm an int dump. But I'm confident that I'm going to beat Fear of the Dark this time. If I succeed, I'll post a replay which also doesn't have all those fancy charms like Duty.

EDIT: Well, I needed a little luck. But here we go.

Hmm, 29 hp left for fight 3 - any one of those last few turns if you didn't have armor pop you're toast. That's the way it's played out for me - I'm down to my last charm before dying and I play some useless spirit charm typically instead. Twice I've died at the same time the cocoon did. Miserable.

I haven't made any Titan Shields; haven't farmed sites in a long time. Maybe I should just go do that for a while instead.

Song of Chaos was an interesting choice. I think there's some penalty for using a debuff rune in fight 3, but it's probably worth it for limiting damage by the abominations. I might try that.

I think the only real suggestion I can make is to try a shorter (45ish charms) deck - you can see from the two replays posted that should be enough so you won't exhaust (keeping in mind Wazi had some self spirit going on). Hopefully that'll mean your best charms aren't as diluted with the weaker ones. I also personally found that having armor on every single charm in my deck made my deck much more reliable, but obviously Wazi didn't go that route, and it may not be possible depending on what charms you've got.

I'll give that dungeon a try when I'm done with farming Charm Alchemist in Prelex Smile
